Dear Flowers Members,
Pinot Noir is famously challenging to coax to perfectly balanced, complex ripeness. At Flowers, we consider this an extreme opportunity, farming the variety on the wild edge of Sonoma, where precipitous ridges hug the foggy coast. Here, ripeness depends on piercing sunlight above the fog line at soaring elevations, and complexity is grounded in rocky soils tumultuously formed by ancient geologic activity.
In our Sea View Ridge vineyard, we welcome these intense conditions. It is this wilderness winegrowing, as we call it, that shapes remarkable Pinot Noir. Farming in the fractured red rock on steep, undulating ridgetops might challenge even the hardiest members of our team. But through years of focused soil studies and first-hand experience with the site, we have learned how best to capture its character. Minerality from those rocky soils is the wine’s signature under pungent forest aromatics and vivid ripe fruit.
The property’s wildness holds both organization and diversity. Woven through 400 wooded acres on this precipice above the Pacific are 40 acres of vines that make up five “neighborhoods” – blocks distinct in the personality they derive from the elements above and below ground. Savory, earth-bound flavors in one give way to ethereal aromatics in another. With attentive farming tailored to each component of the mosaic – picking each in succession, at its optimum point of maturity – we are able to honor and harmonize these unique expressions in the vineyard within each vintage.
In 2022, with late-summer warmth rising, the window was short, drawing us headlong into harvesting each block directly on the heels of the last. From that responsive timing came harmony. And we are very excited to share with you our 2022 Sea View Ridge Pinot Noir, a wine brimming with a clear sense of place rooted in comingling complex vineyard profiles.

2022 Sea View Ridge Pinot Noir
Dramatic geology, extreme coastal climate, and a wild ridgeline environment converge in this Pinot Noir. Warm treetop botanicals, redolent of oak and madrone bark, mingle with dried wild fennel, savory spice, and a gentle salinity on the nose. These aromas radiate out to a vibrant palate, where tannin builds on tannin, drawing bright energy to the top of the palate. An ethereal veil of tart red cherry and dusty alpine strawberry spritzed with blood orange wraps the finely knit structure, with mountain minerality, texture, and tension lifting and lingering on the finish.
